Who was Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec?
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901), magyarul gyakran Tuluz-Lotreknéven említve, was a French Post-Impressionist painter, printmaker and illustrator, born into an aristocratic family in Albi. A childhood illness left him with short stature, and he found his true home in the bohemian world of Montmartre, immortalising its cabarets, dance halls and performers in vivid colour and confident line.
His posters for venues like the Moulin Rouge revolutionised commercial art and turned advertising into a respected art form. He died at just 36, but left one of the most influential bodies of work in modern graphic design.
Toulouse-Lautrec's most famous works
Moulin Rouge – La Goulue (1891)
Moulin Rouge – La Goulue was Lautrec's first major poster commission and an instant sensation — its bold silhouettes and flat colours plastered across Paris overnight, launching his career as the poster artist of Montmartre.
At the Moulin Rouge (1892–95)
At the Moulin Rouge is a large group portrait of Lautrec's friends and regulars at the famous cabaret, painted with unflinching honesty and striking, almost theatrical lighting.
Jane Avril Dancing
One of several portraits of the cabaret dancer Jane Avril, capturing her distinctive, angular movement with rapid, expressive lines.
Divan Japonais
A poster advertising a Montmartre cabaret, famous for its bold cropping and Japanese-influenced composition — hugely influential on later graphic design.
In Bed: The Kiss
A tender, intimate painting from Lautrec's series depicting the private lives of sex workers in Montmartre brothels, painted with empathy rather than judgement.
